A Kambala Race is a traditional event that has occurred annually in Karnataka at Kadri Kambalaguthu for over a thousand years. It takes place to honor the gods for protecting their crops and to mark the beginning of the sowing season. Households that participate have a family member run with a pair of their best bullock cows across the paddy fields in events that can last all night and even days. The winner is rewarded money (traditionally a pot of rice) and brings honor to the family.
